Italy isn't a huge country in terms of size, but the same simply cannot be said for its culinary offerings. Few other countries can match the flavors and textures that have been created from Italy's history.
Campania. Sure it's known as the birthplace of the Neapolitan pizza, but this popular culinary area in Italy creates some of the most delicious veggies in all of Italy - and some may argue that the vegetable dishes that come from this region compete on the world stage. Add in some delectable seafood that's always caught locally (think squid, cuttlefish, mussels and clams) and we're talking about a culinary destination that has to be seen, or tasted, to be believed.
Tuscany. It's among the most well-known culinary areas in Italy, but few realize that the tradition in this region is one of traditionally muted flavors. Popular dishes from this region include soups of local beans and greens along with protein-filled favorites like steaks and hearty stews. You'll also find that people from the Tuscany region also use dried beans, and saltless bread in many of their dishes. Of course, Tuscany is also known for its wines.
Sicily. Yes it's an island, but it's managed to incorporate plenty of influence from surrounding regions into its culinary palette. Meat sauces, simmered for countless hours served with Marsala wine choices are often found on dinner tables in this area. And with all the Greek, Arab, Spanish and French influence on the island, it's no wonder this is among the most popular destinations for those who want an authentic taste of Italy.
Marche. Thick and rich seafood soups are on the menu in this Italian region. Toss in some seasoned, grilled meats and natural cheeses that are aged in some of the regions cavernous areas, and you've got a place that is the envy of many regions in Europe.
Emilia-Romagna. If you've ever tasted an authentic dish with even a hint of balsamic vinegar, it's likely that it has origins in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy. Beyond this, it's thought to be the inner soul of Italy's culinary world with dishes that include Proscuitto di Parma and a host of stuffed pasta full of flavor and authenticity.
These are just five of the top culinary areas in Italy. Can you believe that it's generally agreed that there are 20? That's right - 20 areas in Italy to explore and learn more about. Got a favorite Italian dish of your own? Let us know in the comments.
