According to Wikipedia, Bacon Jam is “...a bacon-based relish, similar to the Austrian starter Verhackert. It is made through a process of slow cooking the bacon, along with onions, vinegar, brown sugar and spices, before mixing in a food processor.”
So it’s like relish. But it’s jam. Bacon-based jam, at that. So, what exactly are we using this for again?
Well, let us tell you: You can use bacon jam for just about anything. Throw it on your burgers, your dawgs, your sandwiches - whatever you like.
Heck, we’ve even heard of people putting it on ice cream! Yeah, you read that right - bacon jam on ice cream. Note: We have not tried bacon jam on ice cream. Someone in the USA did. So if you want to try it for yourself and get back to us, go for it.
Bacon Jam Done Right
The slow cooking of the bacon really brings out that rich, salty flavor that everyone loves. No need to babysit it and worry about grease splattering, here. Use a crock pot, or your oven on low heat - whatever keeps the bacon cooking, but not sizzling. That’s key here.
Along with the bacon, you’ll need to be slow cooking some onions, too. Why? Because onions are sweet and when they caramelize, they get even better and they’re great for offsetting the saltiness of the bacon.
A little bit of brown sugar, vinegar and spices help even out the complexities of the flavoring to create a taste that you simply have to try to believe.
Of course, it’s calorie-rich, thanks to the bacon...and the sugar, so go lightly on it. It’s there for flavoring - not as a side dish. All you need is a little slather on your food to tap into that flavor.
