Why We Use Paper To Wrap Our Food

If you’ve ever wondered why restaurants choose to use paper products to wrap and serve their menu items, then this is the post for you. If you’ve never wondered, but we caught your interest anyway, read on…

There are quite a few reasons why restaurants choose to use paper products in their quick-serve restaurants. Today, we’ll look at five reasons and give you a brief explanation.

 1. Paper Products Are Biodegradable

The main reason paper is used is because it can break down when disposed of. Now, restaurants aren’t breaking any new ground when it comes to using paper – just about every quick-serve and fast-casual restaurant in the world does this, but it’s important that as many restaurants as possible chose paper (as opposed to plastics) to minimize the impact on the environment. A restaurant could easily choose to use some sort of plastic wrapper and packaging for our food, but restaurants should do their part to minimize their impact on the environment.

2. Paper Products Are Sustainable

Paper comes from trees. Trees grown and can be re-planted. So when restaurants use paper products they know that the trees that have been used in the process can be replaced in a sustainable way. It’s somewhat complementary to the first reason – restaurants are trying to minimize their impact on the environment in as many ways as possible. This is just one more reason why restaurants choose paper to wrap and serve their burgers and other menu items.

3. Paper Products Are Economic

Paper wrappers for food are fairly easy to manufacture. Because of this, there’s very little cost that gets incorporated into the price of a restaurant’s menu items. If a restaurant were to choose a different wrapping material, that price would likely be reflected in the price of a menu item. And most restaurants know that everybody wants a good burger at a good price, so they do their best to keep prices down – this is just one of those ways.

4. Paper Products Are Brandable

If you’ve ever ordered a burger (please tell us you have) from a quick-serve or fast-casual restaurant, you’ll know there’s usually no mistaking what restaurant it came from. Restaurants put their logo on the wrapper, boxes, cups and many other items to maintain their branding. It’s quite easy to get a logo printed on paper items that are used in a restaurant’s locations. If for some reason, a restaurant wanted to change branding slightly, it would be very easy to simply change the graphics that are printed on their paper items moving forward. This is just another way restaurants save on spending to keep costs down.

5. Paper Products Are Flexible

Restaurants serve many items in boxes, tray, bags and other carrying items. This is possible because they have done their homework and determined sizes that can be used for multiple purposes. The same goes for the paper restaurants use to wrap burgers and other menu items. The same paper for a smaller burger can usually be used can be used for larger burgers as well. Again, restaurants are saving money by adopting a one-size-fits-most methodology.

So there you have it. If you ever wondered why restaurants use paper products to serve food, now you have a few reasons. Feel free to share your new-found knowledge with your friends. If you have an comments about packaging, feel free to leave a comment!
