The Golden Arches Take a Walk on the Sriracha Side in Ohio, USA

If you enjoy the McDonald’s signature burger, and you also enjoy spicy Sriracha sauce, this post will be of interest to you. If you also just enjoy reading about new and interesting ways big QSR brands are doing to stay relevant, keep reading as well.

The global burger chain announced recently that it is testing a Sriracha Big Mac burger menu item in the USA. The test is only taking place in one city as of right now - Columbus Ohio. The city has been a popular test location for other “Mac” products that are set to be introduced nation-wide in 2017.

But for now, Columbus has that market cornered on spicy Big Macs. Those who order the item can request the spicier sauce on ANY of the brand’s burger items and also request the sauce in a small tub for dipping things like fries, chicken nuggets or whatever else one may feel needs a little heat. They’re branding this as “spicy meets saucy” which is kind of a cool twist for the company who is always looking for new ways to give customers new flavor profiles in already-existing menu items.

However, this isn’t the first time the company has dipped into the popular spicy sauce. They’re introduced similar topping and burgers in Canada and several other states in various ways to a decent degree of success.

McDonald’s is also the proud filer of a federal trademark registration for the phrase “Mac Sauce” (note the lack of the word “big” in the phrase) and it’s been hinted that the global brand may be planning to take the new sauce on the road...and into a supermarket near you - something we’ve written about in the past that QSR operators are doing to boost (or maintain) revenue without you having to even enter their locations.

McDonald’s did this with McCafe coffee previously to large-scale success, and so it makes sense that they may be planning to do the same with the sauce.

Other Sriracha releases from McDonald’s have included:

  • Signature Sriracha toppings in San Diego, CA and Washington State.
  • The Spicy Sriracha Mighty Angus Burger in Canada

Will Sriracha be the flavor saviour McDonald’s is looking for when it comes to attracting new guests and keeping existing customers coming back? Only time will tell. It sounds like this test is in the very early stages, however if we were a little closer to Columbus, we’d definitely take our chances with the sauce on our burger - and for dipping fries and nuggets. We’d probably order an extra drink and keep some ketchup on-hand just in case.
