Five Strange Burgers That are the Real Deal - and Delicious, Too!

When it comes to hamburgers, there are two main groups of people out there: Those who like a traditional burger with traditional toppings that they can recognize, pronounce and, most importantly, enjoy. Then there is the second camp of burger fans who enjoy the crazy. The fun. The off-the-wall. These are the people who seek out new burger flavors and enjoy every last bite even if they don’t fully understand exactly what it is they’re eating.

For that second group, today’s post is for you. We’re going to dig into five wacky burgers that are actually available in U.S. restaurants.

DAD'S WAFFLE AT BUTTERMILK KITCHEN, ATLANTA

What makes this unique burger so crazy and great: The combination of maple syrup and butter on top of the burger. Instead of the more traditional move of putting a burger patty between two waffles, Dad's Waffle brings the burger to center stage by topping a sourdough waffle with a huge (really huge) burger patty slapping on a pat of house butter, and maple syrup. Simple. Superb. Delicious.

CHORIZO BURGER AT THE BLIND BURRO, SAN DIEGO

What makes this unique burger so crazy and great: chorizo and grilled poblano peppers on top of this amazing piece of meat. Creamy Oaxaca cheese coupled with the spicy poblano peppers and house-made chorizo makes this burger a masterpiece of flavor that attacks your tastebuds with a profile that will leave you wanting more.

GRASS-FED CHEESEBURGER AT CAFÉ GHIA, BROOKLYN

What makes this unique burger so crazy and great: alfalfa sprouts combined with tomato aioli The garlicky, sweet, tart, and aioli is the condiment of dreams. It’s the sort of thing you’d eat with a spoon because it’s tasty enough to be a side dish.

COUNTRY BOY/GAL BURGER AT SCHOOL YARD BAR AND GRILL, MILWAUKEE

What makes this unique burger so crazy and great: achiote-seasoned duck coupled with roasted corn relish and a one-of-a-kind adobo sauce. With the texture of tender pulled pork, the succulent duck practically melts in your mouth. To cut through the richness, the adobo sauce has a unique spicy-tang that creates great balance in what could otherwise be an awkward burger.

BURGANATOR! AT STONEFLY BREWERY, MILWAUKEE

Unusual ingredient: beer cheese sauce. That’s right - beer...and cheese. The combination creates a thicker sauce that really sticks to everything - preventing the sauce from running down to your plate. You bought a burger to eat, the last you want to do is lick the plate, right? A couple of crispy onion rings do double duty to hold the sauce in-place as well. The beer-cheese creates a flavor contrast that really melds nicely with the juiciness off the burger and toppings.

Five burgers. Five incredible flavor profiles and preparations that create unique experiences that you can’t get anywhere else. What do you think? Are these crazy-good? Or just plain crazy? Let us know what you think in the comments, and if you have a burger you’d like to suggest, we’re all ears!
